Hi all,

With the release of the Teaser Trailer for X-men first class (below) I thought I would talk take this opportuntity to talk about what/who are the X-men.

First, here is the teaser trailer of the film……..

Well, it certainly looks good doesn’t it

So who are the X-men?

The X-men are a superhero team in the Marvel Comics Universe and were created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby.

They first appeared in the comic The X-Men #1 (September 1963). The basic concept of the X-Men is that under a cloud of increasing anti-mutant sentiment, Professor Xavier created a haven at his Westchester mansion to train young mutants to use their powers for the benefit of humanity, and to prove mutants can be heroes.

They are called the  “X-Men” because they possess special powers due to their possession of the “X-Gene,” a gene normal humans lack but which gives Mutants their abilities. Early on, however, the “X” in X-Men stood for “extra” power which normal humans lacked. It was alluded that the mutations were incurred as a result of radiation exposure.

In 2000 the start of the X men trilogy series of films were released.  These films focussed on the conflict between Professor Xavier’s X-Men, and the Brotherhood of Mutants, led by Magneto.

However, X-men first class is the prequel to the X-men trilogy series and basically charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga.

Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. They were not archenemies, but were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop Armageddon.  In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

So for those unfamiliar with the X-men I will go through come of  characters from the comics we will see in this film….

Charles Xavier aka Professor Xavier
Pre-wheelchair-bound telepathic mutant.  As a high-level telepath, Xavier can read, control and influence human minds. A scientific genius, he is also a leading authority on genetics, mutation, and psionic powers.

Mystique
Blue-skinned shape shifter (also seen in X-men trilogy).

Moira McTaggert
A Scottish geneticist and expert in mutant affairs. Friend of Charles Xavier.

Hank McCoy aka Beast
Possesses ape-like superhuman physical strength and agility and oversized hands and feet. Also an incredibly smart scientist (underused in  ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’)

Erik Lehnsherr aka Magneto
Younger version of the Master of Magnetism. he is a powerful mutant with the ability to generate and control magnetism.

Havok
Absent from the ‘X-Men’ trilogy, the character of Havok  is Cyclops’ livelier brother Scott.  Havok can generate powerful “plasma blasts” , an ability he has had difficulty controlling.

Emma Frost
The White Queen.  A powerful mutant with telepathic abilities.

Azazel
Father of X2’s Nightcrawler, Azazel is also a teleporter.

Angel
The mutant with fly-like powers.

Anyway, I can’t wait to see all these superheroes/villians on the big screen (I wont tell you who are which yet as it may spoil it for you if havent read the comics). I just hope it is as good as I am anticipating.

What do you think? Do you agree?

X-men first class will be out at the cinemas on 2nd june 2011.
