Hi folks,

I have just seen the trailer for the new BBC1 science fiction series “outcasts” which will be seen on BBC1 at 9pm on monday 7th February 2011.

It looks interesting and is about a group of courageous pioneers who face a unique opportunity: the chance to build a new and better future on another planet, Carpathia.

Here is a brief summary of story:-

Led by President Tate (Cunningham) and his core team of Stella (Norris), Cass (Mays) and Fleur (Mason), they take charge having settled alongside Expeditionaries Mitchell and Jack. A diverse group of individuals who left their old lives behind, now promised a second chance at life they create a society, far away from their home, friends, family and pasts. Settled in the town of Forthaven on Carpathia, they are passionate about their jobs, confident of their ideals and optimistic about the future.

The planet offers the possibility for both corruption and redemption; while they try to avoid the mistakes made on Earth, inevitably our heroes cannot escape the human pitfalls of love, greed, lust, loss, and a longing for those they’ve left behind.

As they continue to work and live together they come to realise this is no ordinary planet… is there a bigger purpose at work? Mystery lurks around them and threatens to risk the fragile peace of Forthaven.

Sounds interesting doesn’t it and I will probably watch the 1st episode just to see if it is any good or not.

Here is the trailer to wet your appetite…

So what do you think? Will this be a hit or miss for the BBC? Let me know what you think?

Hi Folks,

As some of you may know I will be publishing my 1st horror ebook “The madness on Beelzebub” very soon (click here for details) and it got me to thinking about when I first decided to write it and my journey from the initial idea to novel…And I thought I would share my experiences with you.

I guess I had my first idea to write a novel many moons ago and my journey, of writing a book, started with a single step, an idea.

That reminds me of quote I heard recently ” A journey of a thousand miles…. begins with a single step (Lao-tzu)”. I guess this can apply to anything.

Anyway, where was I. Well I had worked for about 12 years at Sanofi Aventis (a major pharmaceutical company) as a scientist. But I quit (end of 2006), for a number of reasons, sold the house and spent 6 months travelling around the world with my soon to be wife. We came back to england, broke and expecting our 1st child.  I was unemployed and had time on my hands and therefore made the decision to make use of this spare time and do something I’ve always wanted to do and that was write my1st book.

I had many ideas floating round my head so deciding on the story topic/plot was my first step and it was very difficult to say the least….But, after many sleepless nights I managed it….. I decided on a horror novel about a mans journey into madness, murder and the devil.  I wont give much more away as I don’t want to spoil the story if you want to read it.

Now deciding to write a story and actually writing are two completely different things… You sit there, open the word processing document software ready to start typing and then….. God! what on earth do I write, how do I put my story on paper? My mind went blank…

Now, because of my scientific background I decided to approach it the way I would approach writing a scientific report.  So I took time out to plan my novel. First I decided on the characters, when and where it was based, outlined a beginning, middle and ending….and, after a couple of weeks of planning what it was about I started writing…… It was still very hard as there were a lot of distractions but I did it.

So if you want to write a novel, take my advice, and plan your novel first…..and then write.

Here are my top ten tips:-

1. Decide on the Plot, What the novel is going to be about.

2. Plan your novel.

3. Map out whats going to happen at the beginning, middle and end.

4. Create your main Characters. Make notes about each of them and how the characters relate to each other.

5. Decide the tense, where and when it is based and who is going to be telling the story. For example it could be a character in the book telling the story from his perspective.

6. Keep a notepad for ideas. I had a notepad and would always write silly ideas in it, some of which went into my book and some didn’t.

7. Then write and make yourself write every day, whether it’s a sentence, a chapter, or more, you must regularly dedicate some time to your novel. Set aside a quiet hour where everyone must leave you alone. Morning or night, it doesn’t matter, although some writers work better at certain times of the day. Just make sure you write daily! In my case, I would make sure that I would spend an hour each morning devoted to my novel.

8. Seek constructive feedback……from somebody you trust.  I asked a couple of people to read mine and give me feedback. And I used this feedback to revise my novel.

9. Keep revising, editing and rewriting your story..

10. Complete & then publish.

I know there is more to it than that and I know there are several methods than you can use, but these were the basic steps I used. It took me about 2 years to complete in total, re writing it many times in the process. But at last it was complete (at end of 2008) and then I thought “now what do I do?”.

Well, I thought maybe I should try and get published, it cant be that hard can it??? lol mmmm how little I knew.  So I took a trip to the library and got the latest edition of the writers handbook and started writing letters to as many publishers/editors/agents as I could….. Well, 50 rejections later I realised it wasnt that easy…

We are not taking new authors at this present time… We dont publish anything from people who dont have an agent……its not what we are looking for at the moment, ect..

This was very disheartening and so I gave up on trying to publish it… Then I thought “Maybe I should try and do it myself, or try an ebook!”.  I did look at trying to publishing it myself, and there are many companies out there that will help, but its costs a lot money to self publish (which I didnt have at that time) and so decided not to pursue this route….

However, the idea of ebook appealed to me  BUT! by this time (last year) I was too scared to publish it.  After all the rejection letters I received it had really put me off…. If I did publish my novel as an ebook, what happens if no body likes it.  What happens if it doesnt sell. I hate to admit it but I was afraid……. very afraid.  And FEAR is a good persuader.

But then I got to thinking If I dont try, I will never know.  So after much soul searching, I conquered my fear and decided yes, yes I will publish as an ebook and if nobody likes it, so what! at least I have tried, at least Ive done it…… and the journey leads us to here and pretty soon my first horror ebook will be on sale as a kindle ebook, exciting times hey 🙂 I will let you know soon when it is on sale.  And by the way, if I can do it, you can do it too. Dont make the same mistake as me and let Fear hold you back… I guess this applies to a lot of other things too.

So has anybody else written a novel and managed to publish it themselves??  What are you experiences of writing? Let me know.

Thats about it now, But I have to admit writing this blog and talking about ebooks has got me thinking about another question. As ebook sales take off, will they overtake paper copies of books, and will there be a time when we no longer publish/sell books in paper format?? Just a thought…

Hi folks,

There is yet another remake on the horizon with news that Colin Farrell is to star in a remake of ‘Total Recall’.  Farrell is currently putting himself through a gruelling training regime in a bid to get in shape for the action hero part of Douglas Quaid. Filming on ‘Total Recall’ will begin in May.

The Irish actor will reprise Arnold Schwarzenegger’s lead role in the 1990 classic. Here is a reminder of the original.

Why oh why do we need remakes or reboots??

With spiderman and superman being also rebooted this year do we need yet another remake. I personally dont see the point, unless the original was rubbish.  Is there any creativity left in this world? It seems there is an abundance of reboots and remakes. Is that just me or do other people agree and tire of all these remakes.

I must agree that some remakes are interesting if technology moves forward and a newer version can make an event more “realistic” on film… but I guess it depends on which generation you belong to.  But some people (like me) don’t like seeing younger actors replacing people they associate with a role. For example I really liked Toby Maguire as spiderman or Christopher Reeve as superman and it spoils it for me replacing them with another actor.

I just dont see the point of another actor replacing them. I guess it just spoils the ellusion for me!

In my opinion, most of the time, the original is much better than the reboot/remake.  The effects of older films might not be upto todays standard but the story is better.

For example if you take the war of the worlds remake (2005) with Tom cruise. I was really looking forward to this one but it was a real let down compared to the 1955 original. Dont get me wrong, the effects was better but the story was crap…. And Tom Cruise was the totally wrong actor for the main character in the film. There are many other examples but I will stop my rant now otherwise I will be on here all day :).

So what do you think? Do you agree? Are there too many remakes/reboots?

Hi all,

I just wanted to tell you that I will be publishing my first novel entitled  “The madness of Beelzebub” soon…

I have not got a publisher or agent and it would cost too much too publish it as a paper copy myself. So I have decided (to keep costs down) to publish it as a pdf ebook through my science fiction and horror website and as a kindle ebook on amazon. I am in the final stages of formatting it at the moment. And the price is likely to be £3.75.  What does every one think of the price. Is it too high/low?  Any price suggestions would be most welcome.

So whats it all about I hear you ask??

Well, “The madness of Beelzebub”  is basically a horror thriller….    Things go from bad to worse as many unfortunate things that happen to John Beck which then plunges him into horror and madness.  He is then seduced/saved by an entity who claims he is “the chosen one” to do battle against evil.  Is he mad or is he really “the chosen one”???

Beelzebub literally means  “Lord of the Flies”; Ba’al-zebub, also called Beelzebub or Beelzebul is known as the ‘prince of demons’. In the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke),  it’s who the Pharisees accused Jesus of being because he could cast out demons.

Its about 42,000 words long and will appeal to fans of Ian Rankin and Stephen King who have had a strong influence on my work. It was hard work and took about a year to write.  I hope people will like it, but I just wanted to share my work.

So has anybody else written a novel and managed to publish it themselves??  What are you experiences of writing?

There will be more news about it very soon…

Here is the new trailer of the upcoming Marvel comics film “Thor” which is due out in April this year.

This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

I am really looking forward to this film and the trailer has wet my appetite even more.  As I have previously mentioned this year sees huge selection of Marvel Comic films being released. I am a huge fan of Marvel Comics and when I have further news I will let you know.

So, What do you think? Are you a fan of Marvel Comics like me?

By the way, if you want to purchase second Marvel Comics please look at the science fiction and horror ebay shop.

And for more news and reviews of other upcoming science fiction and horror films please look at the SFHDominion monthly Newsletter. And by the way in May 2011 there will be an in-depth review of “Thor”.

Nicolas Cage has done it again…We have seen him in other sci fi films such as Ghost Rider, The Sorcerer’s apprentice and kick ass, which I thought were pretty good by the way.

He is starring in another fantasy film. This time “The Season the Witch” which is due out on the 7th January 2011.

So whats it about, well basicaly its about two knights (played by Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman) who have returned from the Crusades to find their homeland ruined by the Black Plague. A girl is accused of being a witch and causing the devastation. The two knights are commanded to transport Anna to a monastery so the monks there can lift her curse from the land.

Here is the trailer

Mmm, Im not sure about this one really. Im not that keen on seeing it, but I may be wrong.  However, I will tell you all about it in February’s edition of  the SFHDominion monthly newsletter where there will be an indepth review of this movie.

So what do you think? Have you seen it or are you not that bothered….

What’s in store for 2011

In 2010 we saw the return of dr who and part 1 of the Harry Potter Finale. Both of which I enjoyed.  It’s also been a good year for comic hero movies. But the dust has barely settled on 2010 and yet here I am looking forward to another year of must-see movies and television programmes that have already got me very excited for the next twelve months. There is a superb line-up superhero movies to science fiction westerns, but which ones are the cream of the crop? Let me guide you through the minefield of buzz and into the most promising films that lie ahead.

I await with eager anticipation for upcoming X-Men, Green Lantern, Spiderman Reboot, Thor, Captain America and the First Avenger’ movies. In fact the comic book landscape looks pretty good. Lets just hope they live up to my expectation.

In addition, the superhero wildcard ‘The Green Hornet’ offers something a bit different. It promises interesting visuals, and the unconventional casting of Seth Rogan gives us hope for comedy capers.

Then there is Cowboys vs Aliens which I am also looking forward to…The title says it all. Cowboys AND aliens, it’s the golden combo! Gun-toting loners battling little green men is the B-movie dream. Only this B-movie has gone positively A-List, recruiting Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Sam Rockwell and Olivia Wilde to its madcap cause. I dare you to watch the trailer and tell me that this doesn’t look awesome… Here is a taster.

But what I am waiting for most of all is Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part II

The final Potter outing just pips it in the anticipation stakes against its most high-profile rival, Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt1, as the teen vampire epic could yet go either way. Part 1 of the Potter finale did a great job of setting up the climatic battles we have all been looking forward to, even if the film itself suffered by feeling like a glorified prologue in the process. Even cinemagoers who can’t stand the franchise will be keen for this instalment to finally come, and go. Alas, we must wait a little longer for the trailer.

And then there is new series of Dr who and the contunuation of the event to look forward to.

Of course, I could be wrong on these. So if you think I’ve missed out or neglected any more exciting prospects, please enlighten me.
